Workspace and Environment: This Will Destroy You

07 Black Dunes by GirlieAction

Listen to Black Dunes from their upcoming album Tunnel Blanket while reading the interview with Alex Bhore of This Will Destroy You, it should make sense…

I was born in Framingham, Massachusetts and currently reside in a small Texas town called Waxahachie (30 minutes south of Dallas). My parents and I moved here when I was 6 so my father could start a new job. I started playing in the school band when I was in sixth grade. My parents gave me a drum set (a great old 60’s Rogers kit that they bought from a friend; I still play it regularly) for Christmas that year and I never looked back.

As far as recording goes, I’d have to say my favorites (or at least the things that have made the biggest overall difference in my recordings) are my Black Lion modded Digi002, Adam A7 monitors and Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones. Having a good sounding interface and accurate monitoring makes recording and mixing significantly more fun. Otherwise, I really love my C&C drum kit. It sounds huge and most other bands that track at my studio end up using it. C&C is a great, family-run company and I plan on playing their drums for a very long time

At the moment, my favorite plugins would have to be the SoundToys stuff. Especially the EchoBoy and Decapitator. They sound great and are easy to navigate and understand. What’s not to love?

Workspace and Environment
I learned a while back that I tend to work most efficiently when my studio is clean and organized. Knowing where shit is makes a huge difference. I live in a small town where there isn’t much else to do so, I’d have to say that my city contributes to my musical output.

Are Ergonomics Important?
Good question. I was actually just given a fancy, ergonomic chair to use in the studio a few days ago. Check back with me. Haha.

Ideal Location
Somewhere near/with a lot of my likeminded, musical friends. I thrive off of collaboration.

Work Ethic
Definitely ‘less is more.’ For example… it seems like every time I use 10-12 mics on a drum kit, I only end up using half of those in the final mix.

First Gear Owned
The first piece of gear I can remember receiving is a Casio Rapman. I still have it and use it on recordings from time to time!

Last Gear Acquired
I got a Bock 195 microphone about a month ago and am really loving it. It works really well on a variety of sources and it’s built like a tank. I look forward to using it for years to come.

Extra Curricular
This Will Destroy You recently did some scoring work for a few independent films. It was our first experience in that world and we hope to do a lot more scoring in the future. I also work with other bands (producing, engineering, mixing) a lot when we aren’t touring. Here’s a link to my recording page on Facebook:

Great interview. The drums on Black Dune sound intense. I’ll have to check out C&C drums!
