Soundworks Collection: John Storyk, Tron, Transformers

SoundWorks Collection: Architect and Acoustician John Storyk from Michael Coleman on Vimeo.

Since the artistry of acoustics is a giant mystery to me, I can’t have anything but the utmost appreciation and respect for this man. A great look into beautiful studios, the layouts and how they’re built.

SoundWorks Collection: The Sound of TRON LEGACY from Michael Coleman on Vimeo.

Even though it being overshadowed by the soundtrack, I feel that the sound design was particularly strong, very stylistic and beautifully done. Also, the forensics-grade repairs on the production dialog was a surprise considering how much noise the set was producing.

Soundworks Collection: The Sound of Transformers: Dark of the Moon from Michael Coleman on Vimeo.

Aside from this being one of the worst theatric experiences I’ve ever experienced and questionably one of the worst sound designed movies I’ve heard with a crazy budget – the process seems interesting and creative.

The Gameleste – Custom Instrument Commissioned by Björk

The Gameleste – a custom instrument for Björk from Andy McCreeth on Vimeo.

Björk commissioned several custom instruments for the shows surrounding the release of ‘Biophilia’

Seeing how nearly everyone uses factory and mass produced instruments, it’s refreshing to see custom instruments pushed in a creative direction albeit not too far from the norm. I’m always curious about the process and workspaces in which custom instruments are created, what source they’re drawn from and obviously the output. This video is a great look into all of those elements.

Suzanne Ciani

This has all the ingredients for a porno, both gear and standard. Nothing particularly amazing in the video except for Suzanne’s sultry voice and basic introduction to synthesis. Here’s an example of some of the advertising work she’s done with the Buchla 200 system: Coke

Blurry. Deal With it.

A few changes from the previous SuONOIO:
- red circuit board

Madrona Labs – Aalto 1.2 Update on Friday

One of my favorite softsynths of all time is getting an extensive upgrade that will feature portability to Windows, a faster program, presets by a bunch of jerks and more! Hopefully it’ll remain at the bargain price of $99. It’ll be released around noon Pacific time. Here is Randy’s rundown of what to expect:

Hi there,
Aalto 1.2 for Mac and Windows will be available this Friday, June 10 at around noon Seattle time.
New in Aalto version 1.2:
- Mac and Windows VST versions
- 64-bit Mac AU / VST
- 64-bit Windows VST
- Improved performance (20-50% faster than version 1.1)
- Brand new patching interface
- New cross-platform preset format
- Improved dial ballistics
- Over 100 new presets from Alessandro Cortini, Richard Devine, Rory Dow, Surachai, Edward Ten Eyck and Madrona Labs.

Mac people, you are really going to enjoy so much more smoothness as compared to 1.1 — I’m really happy to send this one out. The 20-50% is actually conservative, because I rewrote the display code to get rid of the glitching at lower buffer sizes that was especially bad in Live. So, when you were seeing only 50%CPU but hearing occasional glitches… no more.

Now I have to go make the scripts for the website that do the watermarking and emailing, and spend a little more time on the manual. I might be kind of quiet until Friday. Seeya then.

Sonoio – Red Announced

SONOIO – Enough from Alessandro Cortini on Vimeo.

Alessandro Cortini has announced the second installment of SONOIO called RED. While BLUE was a work of art by utilizing a minimal set of tools to their fullest extent, RED is easily my favorite album that Alessandro has released. It’s catchy as shit, created with beautiful instruments and has Alessandro’s signature sound – a perfect summer album and will undoubtedly follow you for years to come. You can download the first 4 songs for free right now but the album drops on June 21st and physical products ship out around then. SuONOIO V2 has a new faceplate and sample bank full of sounds derived from RED. Like the first two batches of SuONOIO, these noisemakers won’t last very long. Support independent artists and buy something.

BLUE is still available as well as NON – a free remix album that features Ladytron, Big Black Delta, Richard Devine and other artists interpreting SONOIO’s work on BLUE.

Interview coming soon… If you have something to ask Alessandro, write it in the comments on this post and if it’s not stupid, we will ask it. We’ll stop taking questions Thursday evening.
*UPDATE – We’re cutting off the questions. Thank you come again.
*UPDATE 2 – If you’re still into badgering him with your questions, ask him on Reddit: HERE!
