TRASH_AUDIO Synth Meet 13 Roundup

Heartfelt thanks goes out to Jessica Tomasin of Mountain Oasis festival and Kelly Kelbel of Make Noise for helping facilitate this past weekend. Without these two wonderful women, this would not have been possible.

After several years, this might be the only picture with the entire TRASH_AUDIO crew together – and it includes Asian Steve.

Sonicstate: Day in the Life of Richard Devine

Follow the updates on the link below…

Richard Devine is one of the sound design superstars of the current age. His experimental music uses the both the cutting edge of modular technology (Intelijel, MakeNoise, AudioDamage,TipTop Audio, 4ms and others) as well as a vast array of plug-ins and software instruments. Indeed, he is an official Native Instruments artist with a penchant for Reaktor and Absynth.
He records and releases for Miami based Schematic Records with many of his recent works exploring algorithmic and modular generative music. In addition his sounds can be found in many current instruments, both hardware and software.
Recently he has released sound packs for AAS Chromaphone and the just released Ultra Analogue, presets for Eventide’s Black Hole spatial processor, AirMusicTech’s additive synth Loom and many others.
Some would consider his the dream job. He has kindly agreed to blog for us during a typical day in the studio – enjoy…

Livewire – Chaos Computer

Mike Brown of Livewire Electronics was one of the first people I met in the modular community when I started some 8 years ago. The Chaos Computer was more of a myth than an actual module in the 5 or so years it took to develop. It would show up in various incarnations, growing in features and then disappear for years. Then Mike died.

When Steve Rightnour of Monorocket handed me the Chaos Computer this weekend, I was equal parts thrilled and saddened. Thrilled because of the obvious reasons of obtaining a module that you’ve heard, tested, and lusted after for several years but saddened because its another Livewire Electronics design that became realized, finalized and put into the “done” category in Mike’s legacy. This thing is in for a world of hurt, just as Mike would’ve wanted it to be.

Modular Wild made a few videos showcasing the random voltages, and audio rate clocking features of the Chaos Computer.

Information

Alessandro Cortini – Resta from Forse 1

One by one, the individual tracks comprising Forse 1 are thrown into the wild. Forse 1 will be released on Important Records 2013.

“Wow. Say what you will about the limitless capabilities of software synthesizers, but Alessandro Cortini is about to throw down a knob-gripping gauntlet on behalf of the analog realm. Forse 1, his upcoming double LP for Important Records, showcases a series of his compositions for the Buchla Music Easel that tonally chew up and spit out the synth competition.

Check out our first taste, “Resta,” below. Revel in the thick, juicy oscillations of its central chord progression; peep those gentle little upper-register chirps; try to hold back your smile as the cutoff opens up and the piece escalates into beautiful distortion (I’ve just been sitting here playing it over and over for a while). In the composer’s own words: “The real change happens at a spectral/dynamic level, as opposed to the harmonic/chordal one. I believe that the former are just as effective as the latter, in the sense that the sonic presentation (distortion , filtering, wave shaping, etc) are just as expressive as a chord change.” I agree, man. Damn.”
