Chicago Buchla Clinic

This past weekend Xart & Trash_Audio hosted a Buchla Clinic and invited Jon Schatz of Buchla and Associates from Berkeley, California to join us. We quickly put him to work by upgrading firmware, handing out orders as well as answering questions. Thanks to everyone that came, especially you guys from Boston and D.C. See you all in September for Synth Meet 8.

Synth Meet 8 Update

There have been changes and I expect there will be even more to come. I have not received confirmation from Elektron so I have taken their name off the list but James Coker of Five12 Inc (AKA Numerology) is coming in for Synth Meet 8 and we’re glad to have him! Hopefuly Elektron gets back to me soon!

As of right now here is our manufacturer list:

Trash_Audio & Xart Synth Meet 8

Trash_Audio and Xart are hosting Synth Meet 8 in Chicago on September 18th and 19th 2010. Saturday the 18th will be reserved for performance and a more intimate setting with the manufacturers. Sunday the 19th will be the normal party atmosphere of the Synth Meets except this time we have an impressive amount of manufacturers coming out. The following manufacturers will be there along with their wares:

Division 6 (Seattle)
Elektron (Sweden)
Flight of Harmony (Washington)
Gorilla Box (California)
Harvestman (Washington)
Make Noise (North Carolina)
Malekko (Oregon)
Mattson (Washington)
MegaOhmAudio (Illinois)
STG (Illinois)
Tip Top Audio (California)

The following artists will perform:
Richard Devine (Georgia)
Josh Kay (North Carolina)
Four Pi Movement (Pennsylvania)

Things are still being finalized and the schedule for the days may change but this is how it’s going down as of right now. I want there to be enough space for everyone but given the incredible response of interested parties, this will no doubt be our largest even and will be a first come first serve. I’d like to limit each night to about 70 people but we’ll see what happens. E-mail us at: trashaudio@gmail.com with “RSVP for for Synth Meet 8” and I’ll send you information including hostels and hotels if you’re coming from out of town.

POLYFUSE – Live Analog Session

Every once in a while I like to hook up my ‘analog’ (No computers) setup and jam out while broadcasting the results on a videocast. Well, I was getting ready to disconnect all the gear in preparation for a big move so I thought’d I’d do one last analog session. This time I remembered to record the audio, so here it is. 1 hour and 22min of analog improvisations:

Exorciser – July 2nd, Chicago

I’m not sure how bands are formed these days but I’ll tell you how Exorciser began. A friend and I recorded a track that ended up being 15 minutes of huge slow metal and he found some musicians that were interested in playing it live. The End. See you Friday.

Xart + Trash_Audio: Chicago Modular Musickal Extemporization Klinic

Chicago Modular Musickal Extemporization Klinic Saturday June 19 2010 12:30PM-?

The XART Studio + TRASHAUDIO.COM will be hosting more fun for 2010. Charles Cohen + hair_loss (Color Is Luxury) will be in Chicago to do a modular synthesizer/ electronics based improv workshop/clinic! – a talk and demo of the architecture of the Buchla Easel – a Performance + discussing and working up patches suitable for free improv + small group jams / improv games- try ideas out, collaborate (and listen!) + plenty of time for give and take all along the way!

Seating/Spots will be limited (to about 20-ish people). This is a RSVP workshop with a modest donation.

A rough schedule is in the works – we plan to keep this low stress, casual and fun! We hope to end the day with an evening concert where you can invite your friends/girlfriend/boyfriend/family whoever! – to listen and watch the results of what we did all day. If you are interested email: kultbox@gmail.com please put Chicago Modular Musickal Extemporization Klinic in the subject! We will forward information on how to attend!

The Color Is Luxury sound is always improvisational, changing and evolving, ranging from very dense and harsh to minimal and ambient, beats to spacey, based on their mood at the time and the atmosphere of the space they’re playing in. Regardless of the situation, they manage to come up with something special.

Charles plays a Buchla Music Easel, a rare analog performance instrument he acquired from master synth maker Don Buchla in 1976. he performs regularly in Philly with various folks on the techno, noise, jazz and new music scenes.

hair_loss plays a variety of esoteric and mainstream effects pedals and devices, which he wires up differently for each show, thus always keeping Charles guessing. hair_loss is also involved with SNOWSTORM & Jive Nation, and collaborates frequently with other Philadelphia artists.

Synth Meet 7 Updates

A number of developments have occurred throughout the past week. Some of the original guests that were supposed to fly in have been kept at home due to work related issues and hopefully they’ll be able to join us in the next synth meet. With that out of the way here’s some of the things I’ll have to show at the Synth Meet on Sunday.

Tip Top Audio is sending two Z3000 MKII Oscillators that feature a new waveshaper.

– I’ll have a Gorilla case that will sport Tip Top Audio power and an insane amount of customizable features including shock-mounted stabilization for the touring musician. Pictures and proper review on it later.

Make Noise is letting me bring the Skiff along with the Pressure Points expander Brains beta to make up for his absence.

And that’s just my share.

Harvestman will be arriving with a Stillson Hammer – which is a hex-output burst generator. Uhh.. I’m assuming that spits out crazy gates.

STG will be bringing the behemoth Archangel Sequencer

We have people coming from all over the country and along with them an insane amount of gear. We’re currently at full capacity and can’t take anymore people. Thanks for all of the interest and get at us earlier for the next synth meet. Sunday can’t come soon enough!

Trash_Audio & Xart: Synth Meet 7

This is the official Spring Synth Meet in Chicago presented by Trash_Audio and Xart. We’ve hosted 6 of these events before and they keep getting more attention so much so that we had to start turning people away last time.

We’re having The Harvestman from Washington, Make Noise from North Carolina, STG from Illinois, and other guests that will be announced. There will also be new products making their debut from a few manufacturers including some from the aforementioned.

We’ll have to put a limit on the amount of people this time around because while these events are a great place to network, Xart’s studio is getting too packed! Also, if you’re a modular/pedal/synth manufacturer, I highly suggest you get in touch to have your gear laid out so people can experience it. If you’re interested in coming please e-mail: ss@thedeepelement.com

Here are some videos of the past events:
